The Enduring Legacy of King Sobhuza II

The foundation of modern eSwatini was significantly shaped by King Sobhuza II, born on July 22, 1899, at Zombodze. A steadfast believer in peaceful negotiation over violence, King Sobhuza II skillfully secured eSwatini’s independence from Britain on September 6, 1968, achieving this monumental milestone without bloodshed. He championed unity, working tirelessly to foster a non-racial society within eSwatini and advocating for unity among African leaders. His commitment to both formal and informal education also left an indelible mark. At his passing on August 21, 1982, at the age of 83, King Sobhuza II was celebrated as the longest-reigning monarch in the world.

King Mswati III: The Reigning Monarch

King Mswati III, born Prince Makhosetive Dlamini on April 19, 1968, is the reigning Ngwenyama (King) of eSwatini and the head of the Swazi Royal Family. Crowned on April 25, 1986, at just 18 years old, he became the youngest ruling monarch globally at the time. Alongside his mother, Queen Mother (Ndlovukati) Ntfombi Tfwala, he governs the country as an absolute monarch.

eSwatini’s most celebrated cultural event, the Umhlanga, or Reed Dance, unfolds annually in late August / early September. This extraordinary eight-day ceremony sees up to 40,000 unmarried girls gather and present reeds to the Queen Mother (Indlovukazi), symbolizing their dedication and the preservation of tradition. Dressed in dazzling, brightly colored attire, their collective dance on days six and seven, especially when the King is present, creates one of Africa’s largest and most spectacular cultural displays. 

The Incwala (First Fruits Ceremony

A sacred tradition dating back hundreds of years, the Incwala is one of Africa’s last remaining examples of a once-common practice. While often translated as the ‘first fruits festival,’ its essence goes far beyond simply tasting the season’s first bounty. It’s fundamentally about cleansing, renewal, and a profound celebration of kingship. Every Swazi may participate in the public aspects of the Incwala. Spectators are welcome, though photography is strictly prohibited without a special permit. The most captivating day to attend is Day Four of the Big Incwala, when feasting and dancing reach their pinnacle. You’ll witness thousands of people, including warriors in full battle regalia, thronging the royal parade grounds. The songs, dances, and rituals performed inside the royal kraal remain a matter of utmost secrecy and are never recorded. This powerful event typically takes place around the last week of December / first week of January.
